A law student in Shahjahanpur, UP who accused BJP leader Chinmayanand of sexual assault, was arrested and jailed today. A special team probing the case has arrested the 23-year-old student on a charge of extortion on Wednesday morning, a day before a court was to take up her request for protection from arrest.
The lady, her face covered, was taken to a hospital swarming with policemen for a medical examination before the arrest. Her father alleges that he was forced to sign an arrest “memo”.
Last week on Friday, the police had arrested 72-year-old BJP leader Chinmayanand but he is currently not in jail. He has been taken to the hospital for apparent heart trouble since Sunday. A former union minister of state for home, he has neither been suspended nor expelled by the ruling BJP.
Yesterday, a Shahjahanpur court had agreed to hear her request for protection from arrest on Thursday. The development coincided with reports that the police were out to arrest her on Chinmayanand’s allegations of extortion.
Sources told that the woman was on her way to court when the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the UP police stopped her car, pulled her out and forced her into their vehicle. As chaos erupted and the media arrived, the police finally allowed the woman to go to court. But she now has to apply for regular bail.
The woman alleges that BJP leader, who runs several educational institutions and ashrams, sexually exploited her after helping with admission into his law college last year. He allegedly filmed her taking a bath at the hostel and blackmailed her with the video and raped her. She was allegedly brought to his room at gunpoint and was forced to give him massages, a few videos of which are already in circulation.
The case went public when the student put up a Facebook post on August 24 after without naming the politician. After that Chinmayanand’s team filed an extortion case on the student. When the UP police tracked her down after a week, the Supreme Court heard her allegations and ordered the SIT to inquire into them.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh court had on Tuesday rejected the bail application of BJP leader Swami Chinmayanand, who was arrested in a sexual-assault case. He had during the interrogation on Friday confessed to having called the law student for “massages” while saying that he was ashamed of his act. The Shahjahanpur chief judicial magistrate said that the bail application should be moved in the sessions court.
On Monday, he was admitted at Lucknow’s Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, complaining of chest pain, and remains there under observation.
